What Do Butterflies Symbolize? The Meaning Behind the Monarch, Blue Morpho and More

People have been stopping to watch butterflies for as long as there have been people. After fifteen years of making art and jewelry from real butterflies, the question we hear most at our booth isn't about price or size. It's some version of "What does this butterfly mean?" Usually it comes with a story: a butterfly that showed up at a wedding, at a graveside, or on a hard morning when someone needed a sign.

Here is what butterflies have meant to people over the centuries, and what some of the species we work with are often said to represent.

Transformation and new beginnings

The most universal meaning comes straight from biology. A butterfly starts life as a caterpillar, wraps itself in a chrysalis, and comes out as something completely different. That is why butterflies so often mark big life changes: graduations, recoveries, new jobs, new chapters. A butterfly gift says "I see how far you've come."

The soul

In ancient Greek, the word psyche meant both "soul" and "butterfly." The goddess Psyche is often shown with butterfly wings. That old connection between butterflies and the human spirit is one reason butterflies show up so often in art about love, loss and remembrance.

What different butterflies are said to mean

Monarch: endurance, the journey, and those who came before us

Monarchs make one of the most remarkable journeys in the natural world, migrating up to about 3,000 miles to overwinter in the mountain forests of central Mexico. They arrive around the beginning of November, the time of Día de los Muertos, and in Mexican tradition they are often said to carry the souls of ancestors returning home. Monarchs stand for endurance, faith in the journey, and family.

Blue Morpho: joy, wishes and a little bit of magic

The Blue Morpho lives in the rainforests of Central and South America, and its wings flash an almost electric blue as it flies. Because that blue seems to appear and vanish in the light, it is often linked with luck, wishes and joy. (The blue is not actually pigment. It's made by microscopic structures on the wing. Sunset Moth: hidden beauty

Found only in Madagascar, the Sunset Moth is so colorful that most people assume it is a butterfly. Its iridescent rainbow wings change color as you move. It is a lovely symbol for beauty that isn't always obvious at first glance, and for people who shine in their own way.

This black-and-white butterfly from Southeast Asia drifts slowly through the air like a sheet of paper on the wind. It stands for calm, grace and taking life gently.
