Inside the Studio: Mixed-Media Butterfly Art, Layer by Layer
Share
Some of our favorite work never fits in a jewelry box. Our mixed-media pieces start as a blank board and end as sculpture you can hang on a wall: thick textured paint, gold leaf, natural objects and a real butterfly at the heart of it all.
The Answer is Found in Nature.
Built in layers
Each piece is built up slowly. First comes the sculpted background: plaster-like texture, carved waves and swirls. Then paint, metallics and gold, often in several passes. Last, a real butterfly, ethically sourced after it lived a full life, is set into its place, sometimes under a domed glass lens so it seems to float.
Detail: butterflies under a domed lens, surrounded by hand-applied gold.
A few pieces from the studio
Ride the Wave
Sweeping blues and a scattering of glitter carry two shimmering blue butterflies across the canvas, like riding a current of air.
Ride the Wave.
Sun Goddess
A blazing gold sunburst frames a blue morpho, with deep sculpted blues flowing around it.

Sun and Moon
A silver crescent moon and a gold sun share the night sky, with a blue morpho glowing at the center.
Sun and Moon.
Gold Elegance
Clean carved lines and three gold medallions, each holding a blue morpho. Quiet, modern and luminous.
Gold Elegance.
The North Star
A pale luna moth rests against a dark, gold-striped moon. It's one of our most dramatic pieces.
The North Star.
Butterfly Companions
A heart of twisted branches, real ammonite fossils and a pair of butterflies under glass. It's about the companions who travel through life with us.
Butterfly Companions, detail.
Midsummer's Dream
A meadow of real pressed flowers with butterflies drifting above. It's summer, preserved.
Midsummer's Dream.
Every piece is one of a kind
Because every texture is sculpted by hand and every butterfly is unique, no two pieces are ever the same. If you fall in love with a style, we're also happy to create a custom or memorial piece just for you.
